Mike MacDonald filmed the fish at a depth of 12 m at Fingers Reef, off Point Lonsdale, Victoria on 30 November 2014.  The week before he saw another individual off Sorrento, on the other side of 'The Heads' of Port Phillip Bay. 

The amazing looking species is endemic to (only found in) Australia, occurring in the cool temperate waters of Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia.
