Nature, science and culture at Australia’s first museum

A visit to the Australian Museum (AM) is the perfect day out for families and visitors of all ages. Discover immersive exhibitions and interactive experiences at Sydney's popular 'dinosaur museum'!

Located in central Sydney opposite Hyde Park, Australia's first museum blends iconic heritage architecture with award-winning contemporary design.

Admission: Free general entry. Fees apply for major exhibitions – please check our What's On calendar for details.

Opening Hours: Open daily 10am-5pm (closed Christmas Day)
Note: Burra learning space and Billabong Waterhole Café close at 4:30pm

Tickets: Not required for permanent exhibitions with General Entry. Book online for special exhibitions and events.

Location: Corner of College Street and William Street, opposite Hyde Park and St Mary's Cathedral. Easy access from public transport and a close to Sydney's CBD.

  • Bus: Town Hall or Hyde Park stops
  • Parking: There is no on-site parking at the Museum, but there are numerous parking stations nearby and in the CBD, including Wilson Parking in the Domain.

What you'll see at the Australian Museum

Australian animals: Learn about Australia's unique fauna, including the iconic koala, the extinct Tasmanian Tiger, and deadly snakes. Explore biodiversity in Wild Planet (Upper Ground floor) and Surviving Australia (Level 2).

First Nations Gallery: Discover the stories and living cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples – one of the oldest continuing cultures in the world – in Garrigarrang (Level UG).

Dinosaurs: Sydney's 'dinosaur museum' features giant fossilised skeletons and life-size casts of Australian dinosaurs, plus the infamous Stegosaurus and T.Rex in our Dinosaurs exhibition on Level 2.

Westpac Long Gallery: Australia's first gallery showcases 100 treasures from our collections alongside stories of 100 of Australia's most influential people in 200 Treasures of the Australian Museum (Level G).
