Accessible and inclusive events at the Australian Museum
The Australian Museum has a range of onsite accessible programs for deaf and autistic people, as well as online audio description guides to help assist blind and low vision visitors enjoy our permanent exhibitions and special events.
Museum lovers of all abilities are welcome at the Australian Museum (AM) all year round. In addition to accessible access and inclusion principles embedded in the museum, we deliver a program of events featuring Auslan interpretation, hearing loops and reduced-sensory opening times, as well as a range of free online audio description recordings of exhibitions.
The AM also proudly supports the Hidden Disability Sunflower Lanyard Scheme. We have sunflower lanyards available at the front desk for visitors who wish to discreetly let staff know that they have a disability that is not visible.
Auslan workshops and interpreted events
Inclusive programs
The AM hosts Early Birds and Night Owls programs several times a year. These events are designed to help those with autism or sensory sensitivities visit the Museum.
Audio description guides of exhibitions
Working with Vision Australia, the AM has produced a series of online audio description guides of our permanent exhibitions. These descriptions of objects on display and gallery highlights can be accessed for free via a web browser on your mobile phone. Don't forget your headphones!
Hearing Loops in venues
Events held in our Theatre feature a Hearing Loop sound system for people with hearing aids. The Level 4 venues including the Harbour View Room also have hearing loops installed.
