Australian Museum Eureka Prizes Terms and Conditions

Thank you for your interest in the Australian Museum (AM) Eureka Prizes. In order to participate in the AM Eureka Prizes, your entry must comply with:
- Part A: the General Terms and Conditions; and
- Part B: any specific terms for the prize category and/or prize you are entering,
(collectively referred to as “Terms & Conditions”).

Failure to meet all of the Terms & Conditions will automatically disqualify an entry. The AM reserves the right to disqualify non-conforming entries in its sole discretion and no correspondence will be entered into.
Part A. General Terms and Conditions
1. Timing of entry into the prize program
All entries must be received in full by the AM Eureka Prizes via the online entry system by the Entry Deadline. Received entries will be acknowledged by a confirmation email.
If you experience problems uploading your entry or have concerns about what has been uploaded, contact the AM Eureka Prizes via email eureka@australian.museum or phone (02) 9320 6230 prior to the Entry Deadline. The AM Eureka Prizes cannot modify or add to an entry (including Assessor Reports) after the Entry Deadline. Late entries will not be accepted.

2. Entry documentation
Entries must be submitted via the online entry system. Entries with incomplete sets of supporting documentation, as per the 'How to Enter' section for each prize, will not be considered. Submitted material will not be returned. Hard copy entries will not be considered unless there has been a prior agreement in writing with the AM.
You are responsible for making sure your entry is complete and accurate. If the AM considers that you have provided false or misleading information, we may not progress your entry. If you find an error in your entry after submission you should contact the AM Eureka Prizes immediately (and before the Entry Deadline) via email eureka@australian.museum or phone (02) 9320 6230.
If the AM finds an error or information that is missing, we may ask for clarification or additional information from you that will not change the nature of your entry. However, we can refuse to accept any additional information from you that would change your submission after the Entry Deadline.
If, at any point, entry documentation is found to have included false or misleading information the AM Eureka Prizes reserves the right to deem your entry ineligible, this could include retrospectively deeming a finalist or winning entry ineligible.
3. Costs and expenses
There is no entry fee associated with entering the AM Eureka Prizes.
You (including your team, if applicable) enter the AM Eureka Prizes at your own risk and the AM Eureka Prizes, and associated prize partners and program supporters will not be liable for any loss, damage or expense incurred by the entrant(s) as a result of entering the Prizes.
It is the responsibility of the entrant(s) to ensure that conditions of any sponsorship or funding agreements you (and your team) have entered into with a secondary party to produce the entry are met, and that full disclosure of such agreements is included as part of the supporting documentation for that entry.
4. Personal information
The collection and use of personal information contained in your entry will be conducted in accordance with the:
> AM’s Privacy statement and the AM’s Privacy Management Plan
> State Records Act 1998 (NSW)
> Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (NSW)
We may share the information we collect from you with AM employees and contractors, the judging panels, the prize partners, AM Eureka Prize stakeholders and other NSW Government employees and contractors, so we can:
> manage the program
> research, assess, monitor and analyse the program and related activities
> contribute to academic studies on the nature of scientific education, engagement and excellence in Australia (usually on an anonymous basis)
By completing an online entry form that includes your own personal details and the personal details of other people (e.g. team members, nominator etc.) you indicate that you are authorised to share their personal information.
5. Submitting Confidential Information
Entrants accept that any information they supply to the AM Eureka Prizes as part of the entry process might affect the outcome of any patent application and that the AM is not liable for any failed patent application or the consequences from that.
6. Definition of 'Australia or its territories'
For the purposes of the AM Eureka Prizes, ‘Australia or its territories’ refers to the following states and territories:
- States of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania
- Northern Territory
- Australian Capital Territory
- Australian Antarctic Territory
- Coral Sea Islands Territory
- Jervis Bay Territory
- Territory of Christmas Island
- Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands
- Territory of Norfolk Island
- Territory of Ashmore and Cartier Islands
- Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands
7. Judging
Judges will assess entries against the assessment criteria published on the AM Eureka Prizes website.
The deliberations of the judging panel remain confidential. All recommendations and decisions taken are binding and final and no correspondence will be entered into on such matters.
The judges reserve the right not to award a Eureka Prize if, in their view, the quality of entries is insufficiently meritorious when reviewed against the assessment criteria.
8. Finalists
For each prize, Finalists will be contacted by the AM Eureka Prize team before the Public Finalist Announcement date. The term 'Finalist' includes all AM Eureka Prize finalists as well as all Highly Commended entries for the Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize. The following terms relate to all Finalists.
8.1 Finalists are required to provide images and a short film (Promotional Material) that relates to their Entry (in the case of the Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize Finalists the film is their entered work). By submitting your entry, you give the AM and prize partners a non-exclusive, sub-licensable, perpetual, irrevocable licence to use and reproduce Promotional Material in whole or in part for the purposes of promoting the Eureka Prizes or the purposes of the AM more generally in any format or in any media in existence now or in the future.
8.2 Entrants who provide Promotional Material to the AM Eureka Prizes give permission to the AM Eureka Prizes to edit the provided Promotional Material. The AM will take steps to ensure any edits do not undermine the accuracy or integrity of the work presented in the Promotional Material..
8.3 It is the sole responsibility of the entrant to secure permission from third parties for the use of their intellectual property in any Promotional Material (including any recorded music in the Promotional Material). Entrants warrant that they have this permission and indemnify the AM and its prize partners for infringement of a third parties’ intellectual property rights.
8.4 Finalists may publicly state (e.g. in their CV, publicly available biography, Wikipedia page etc.) that they are an AM Eureka Prize highly commended student, an AM Eureka Prize finalist and/or an AM Eureka Prize winner. However, in each case, the reference must include the full prize name alongside the specific year the entrant/s were selected as a finalist and/or winner e.g. Winner of the 2020 Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Science Journalism.
8.5 Each AM Eureka Prize winner, whether an individual or a team member, will be provided with a year specific digital badge within two months of being announced a winner that they can use, at their discretion, to promote their winner status (email signatures, personal webpages, blogs, portfolios, etc.) For the avoidance of doubt, where winners belong to, or are affiliated with, organisations, those organisations are not permitted to use the digital badge to promote their organisation (unless the organisation as a whole has won the prize). Organisations should contact the AM Eureka Prizes for marketing guidelines.
8.6 AM Eureka Prize highly commended students, finalists and winners are able to utilise the AM Eureka Prizes logo when promoting their involvement with the AM Eureka Prizes only with the express written permission from the AM Eureka Prizes administration team, please contact eureka@australian.museum to seek permission.
8.7 No AM Eureka Prize Finalists are able to register a trademark that incorporates the words: “Australian Museum” or “Eureka Prizes”.
8.8 AM Eureka Prize Finalists (both teams and individuals) may be approached by the AM and/or AM Eureka Prize partners to participate in events and/or communication activities in their capacity as a finalist or winner.
9. Prize Money: all Research and Innovation, Leadership and Science Engagement Eureka Prizes
The prize money of $10,000 to be awarded to the winner of each prize will be paid via bank transfer as per the instructions provided to the AM Eureka Prizes administration team via the winner payment form completed by the winner. Prizes may be split up amongst team members up to the total value of the prize money.
10. Prize Money: School Science Eureka Prize
10.1 For individual entries, prize money is divided equally between the winning entrant and their school. For team entries, 50 percent of the prize money will be divided equally between entrants and 50 percent will be paid directly to their school. If a winning entrant is educated at home in accordance with the relevant state or territory legislation, 100 percent of the prize money will be awarded to the entrant(s).
10.2 For any other prizes that may be awarded, the recipients of these prizes should adhere to any terms and conditions provided by the vendor of that prize. Vouchers cannot be exchanged for cash. The AM will not take responsibility for lost vouchers.
Part B. Category and Prize Specific Terms and Conditions
In addition to the General Terms & Conditions in Part A, your entry must also comply with the specific terms for the relevant prize category (listed below) as well as any prize specific terms.

11. Category terms: Research and Innovation Eureka Prizes
11.1 Entrants can either enter themselves or be nominated by others. If an entrant is nominated it is important that they provide input into the entry documentation.
11.2 For an individual entry, the entrant must be a) an Australian citizen, b) an Australian permanent resident or c) a New Zealand citizen residing in Australia or its territories, at the time the activity entered was undertaken.
11.3 For a team entry of up to six individuals, the team leader must be either a) an Australian citizen, b) an Australian permanent resident, or c) a New Zealand citizen who was resident in Australia or its territories, at the time the research entered was undertaken. Members of the team do not have to fulfil these requirements; however, they must have resided predominantly in Australia or its territories at the time the activity entered was undertaken. For entries involving more than six people, you will need to decide upon a team name and one team leader.
11.4 For a team entry involving more than six individuals, you will need to decide upon a team name and one team leader. The team leader must be either a) an Australian citizen, b) an Australian permanent resident, or c) a New Zealand citizen who was resident in Australia or its territories, at the time the research entered was undertaken. Members of the team do not have to fulfil these requirements; however, they must have resided predominantly in Australia at the time the activity entered was undertaken.
11.5 Activity entered for a Eureka Prize must have been undertaken in Australia or its territories, as defined by the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes Terms and Conditions (Clause 6).
11.6 The activity entered or nominated for this prize may not be entered or nominated for another Australian Museum Eureka Prize in the same year.
11.7 A project or activity that has been awarded an Australian Museum Eureka Prize in the past cannot be entered again. Non-winning finalist activity is eligible for re-entry, so long as it meets all other conditions of entry.

12. Prize specific terms: Research and Innovation Eureka Prizes
12.1 NSW Environment and Heritage Eureka Prize for Applied Environmental Research
12.1.1 This prize is open to individuals and teams if the achievement is the result of a collaborative team effort.
12.1.2 For team entries;
12.1.2.1 For entries comprised of between two and six individuals, you will need to decide upon one team leader to administer the entry, however you must describe the contribution of each individual to the research and explain why the Eureka Prize should be jointly awarded. This explanation should be included in the ‘Research Summary.’
12.1.2.2 For entries involving more than six individuals, you will need to decide upon one team leader to administer the entry and enter using a team name. You will not have the opportunity to formally list all individuals involved in the entry.
12.1.3 Activity entered for this prize must have been published in at least one peer-reviewed article (i.e. published in a scientific journal or similar).
12.1.4 Activity entered for this prize (such as data collection and/or research published) must have been occurred no more than five (5) years prior to the Entry Deadline. Reference may be made to earlier published work if it is necessary to provide context to the entered work, however it will not be formally considered by the judges.
12.2 Australian Institute of Botanical Science Eureka Prize for Excellence in Botanical Science
12.2.1 The prize is open to individuals and teams if the achievement is the result of a collaborative team effort.
12.2.2. For team entries:
12.2.2.1 For entries comprising of between two and six individuals, you will need to decide upon one Team Leader to administer the entry, however you must describe the contribution of each individual to the research and explain why the Eureka Prize should be jointly awarded. This explanation should be included in the ‘Research Summary.’
12.2.2.2 For entries involving more than six individuals, you will need to decide upon one Team Leader to administer the entry and enter using a team name. You will not have the opportunity to formally list all individuals involved in the entry.
12.2.3 Activity entered for this prize must have been published in at least one peer-reviewed article (i.e., published in a scientific journal or similar).
12.2.4 Activity entered for this prize must have been published no more than five (5) years prior to the Entry Deadline. Reference may be made to earlier published work if it is necessary to provide context to the entered work.
12.2.5 For the purposes of this prize, ‘botanical science’ refers to the scientific study of the physiology, structure, genetics, ecology, distribution, classification, and economic importance of plants.
12.3 Aspire Scholarship Eureka Prize for Excellence in Interdisciplinary Scientific Research
12.3. The prize is open to individuals and teams if the achievement is the result of a collaborative team effort.
12.3.2 For team entries;
12.3.2.1 For entries comprised of between two and six individuals, you will need to decide upon one team leader to administer the entry, however you must describe the contribution of each individual to the research and explain why the Eureka Prize should be jointly awarded. This explanation should be included in the ‘Research Summary.’
12.3.2.2 For entries involving more than six individuals, you will need to decide upon one team leader to administer the entry and enter using a team name. You will not have the opportunity to formally list all individuals involved in the entry.12.3.3 Activity entered for this prize must have been published in at least three peer-reviewed articles (i.e., published in scientific journals or similar).
12.3.4 Activity entered for this prize must have been undertaken no more than seven (7) years prior to the Entry Deadline. Reference may be made to earlier published work if it is necessary to provide context to the entered work, however it will not be formally considered by the judges.
12.3.5 Activity entered for this prize may come from a broad range of disciplines, including but not limited to scientific disciplines, as long as the outcome of the work represents a scientific or technological breakthrough.
12.4 Australian Research Data Commons Eureka Prize for Excellence in Research Software
12.4.1 This prize is open to individuals and teams if the software development and maintenance activity (“the software activity”) is the result of a collaborative team effort. The team may be a succession of contributors to a software activity over a period of time, possibly under the direction of one or more project leads.
12.4.2. For team entries:
12.4.2.1 For entries comprised of between two and six individuals, you will need to decide upon one Team Leader to administer the entry, however you must describe the contribution of each individual to the software activity and explain why the Eureka Prize should be jointly awarded. This explanation should be included in the ‘Activity Summary.’
12.4.2.2 For entries involving more than six individuals, you will need to decide upon one Team Leader to administer the entry and enter using a team name. You will not have the opportunity to formally list all individuals involved in the entry.
12.4.3 The software activity entered for this prize must have been referenced in at least one peer-reviewed article (i.e., published in a scientific journal or similar). This reference must have appeared more than three (3) years prior to the Entry Deadline. For this reason, entrants are required to nominate development activity that occurred prior to this publication. That development activity can either be towards a release or version of the software, or a specific contribution to a large multi-contributor project. Please note, within the entry materials it is expected that more recent software maintenance activities will also be included in order to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the maintenance of the software.
12.4.4 Software activities may vary in size and scope. Judges will assess the impact and benefit of the development activity relative to the time it was first published. Evidence of the use and impact of the software on research outcomes should come from any time after the publication of the software development activity and will be judged relative to the time it was published.
12.4.5 For the purpose of this prize, ‘research software’ refers to software that has been built for, and used predominantly in, the conduct of research. This research may occur in a broad array of sectors, including, but not limited to, academia, public sector, industry and/or citizen science.
12.4.6 The software activity put forward for this prize can come in many forms including applications, tools, utilities, frameworks or libraries designed to be broadly used for the research purposes, and usually run locally. Or, it may be available as a service, for instance available via a website or web API. It may be open or closed source, free or commercially available.
12.5 Australian Infectious Diseases Research Centre Eureka Prize for Infectious Diseases Research
12.5.1 The prize is open to individuals and teams if the achievement is the result of a collaborative team effort.
12.5.2 For team entries;
12.5.2.1 For entries comprised of between two and six individuals, you will need to decide upon one team leader to administer the entry, however you must describe the contribution of each individual to the research and explain why the Eureka Prize should be jointly awarded. This explanation should be included in the ‘Research Summary.’ You will not have the opportunity to formally list all individuals involved in the entry.
12.5.2.2 For entries involving more than six individuals, you will need to decide upon one team leader to administer the entry and enter using a team name.
12.5.3 Activity entered for this prize must have been published in at least three peer-reviewed articles (i.e. published in a scientific journal, book or similar).
12.5.4 Activity entered for this prize must have been undertaken no more than seven (7) years prior to the Entry Deadline. Reference may be made to earlier published work if it is necessary to provide context to the entered work, however it will not be formally considered by the judges.
12.6 University of Sydney Eureka Prize for Innovative Research in Sustainability
12.6.1 For the purposes of this prize, ‘sustainability’ follows the definition provided by the United Nations Brundtland Commission: “sustainability is meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Entrants should ensure their entered activity is in line with this definition.
12.6.2 Entries may come from subject areas including, but not limited to agriculture; water usage and sanitation; food security, sustainable consumption and production; clean and renewable energy; responsible building; climate action; oceans; and biodiversity.
12.6.3 The prize is open to individuals and teams if the achievement is the result of a collaborative team effort.
12.6.4 For team entries:
12.6.4.1 For entries comprising of between two and six individuals, you will need to decide upon one Team Leader to administer the entry, however you must describe the contribution of each individual to the research and explain why the Eureka Prize should be jointly awarded. This explanation should be included in the ‘Research Summary.’
12.6.4.2 For entries involving more than six individuals, you will need to decide upon one Team Leader to administer the entry and enter using a team name. You will not have the opportunity to formally list all individuals involved in the entry.
12.6.5 Activity entered for this prize must have been published in at least one peer-reviewed article (i.e., published in a scientific journal or similar).
12.6.7 Activity entered for this prize must have been published no more than five (5) years prior to the Entry Deadline. Reference may be made to earlier published work if it is necessary to provide context to the entered work.
12.7 ANSTO Eureka Prize for Innovative Use of Technology
12.7.1 The prize is open to individuals and teams if the achievement is the result of a collaborative team effort.
12.7.2 For team entries;
12.7.2.1 For entries comprised of between two and six individuals, you will need to decide upon one team leader to administer the entry, however you must describe the contribution of each individual to the research and explain why the Eureka Prize should be jointly awarded. This explanation should be included in the ‘Research Summary. You will not have the opportunity to formally list all individuals involved in the entry.
12.72.2 For entries involving more than six individuals, you will need to decide upon one team leader to administer the entry and enter using a team name.
12.7.3 Activity entered for this prize must have been published in at least one peer-reviewed article (i.e. published in a scientific journal or similar).
12.7.4 Activity entered for this prize must have been undertaken no more than three (3) years prior to the Entry Deadline. Reference may be made to earlier published work if it is necessary to provide context to the entered work, however it will not be formally considered by the judges.
12.8 Macquarie University Eureka Prize for Outstanding Early Career Researcher
12.8.1 This prize is open only to individuals. Entries consisting of more than one individual are ineligible.
12.8.2 To be eligible, entrants must satisfy at least one of the below criteria:
12.8.2.1 Be 35 years or younger; or
12.8.2.2 Been awarded their PhD (or equivalent first higher degree e.g., D.Phil., D.Psych., D.Sc) no more than five (5) years prior to prize entry i.e. between April 2016 – and April 2023. For entrants whose work has been realised over a period longer than five (5) years from PhD conferral due to one or more career interruptions, the five (5) year requirement will be extended by the length of the career interruption/s and judges will also take this into consideration when assessing opportunities available to the entrant. 12.8.3 For the purposes of this prize, a ‘career interruption’ is defined as a continuous absence from work for a period of more than one month. Where an entrant has one or more career interruptions, the five (5) year requirement will be extended by the length of the career interruption.
12.8.2.3 The following significant and not overlapping interruptions will be considered:
- Pregnancy
- Major illness/injury
- Carer’s responsibilities
- Non-research employment not concurrent with research employment
- For First Nations entrants and nominees, community responsibilities including ‘sorry business’
- Disaster management and recovery
- Disruption due to international relocation (maximum three months per international location)
- Other reasons set out in the online entry form in the AM’s absolute discretion.
12.8.3 Activity entered for this prize must have been published in at least one peer-reviewed article (i.e. published in a scientific journal or similar).
12.8.4 Activity entered for this prize must have been undertaken no more than five (5) years prior to the Entry Deadline. Reference may be made to earlier published work if it is necessary to provide context to the entered work, however it will not be formally considered by the judges.
12.8.5 Judges will consider the entrant or nominee’s career stage and whether their achievement is commensurate with the opportunities available to them. Entrants and nominees are invited, but not required, to share a relative to opportunity statement with their entry materials. If an entrant is nominated it is important that they provide input to their statement.
12.8.5.1 Research opportunity can include, but is not limited to;
- Research training
- Employment in research positions, either within the research sector or outside academia, including the research component and/or full-time-equivalence of positions
- Research and development activities
- Industry engagement
- Research environment, including supervision, mentoring and leadership
- Professional development
- Research management experience
- Access to research and support facilities
Other opportunities will be considered in the judging panel’s discretion.
12.9 Department of Defence Eureka Prize for Outstanding Science in Safeguarding Australia
12.9.1 The prize is open to individuals and teams.
12.9.2 For team entries;
12.9.2.1 For entries comprised of between two and six individuals, you will need to decide upon one team leader to administer the entry, however you must describe the contribution of each individual to the research and explain why the Eureka Prize should be jointly awarded. This explanation should be included in the ‘Research Summary.’
12.9.2.2 For entries involving more than six individuals, you will need to decide upon one team leader to administer the entry and enter using a team name. You will not have the opportunity to formally list all individuals involved in the entry.
12.9.3 Activity entered for this prize must have been published in at least one peer-reviewed article (i.e., published in a scientific journal or similar).
12.9.4 Activity entered for this prize must have been published no more than five (5) years prior to the Entry Deadline. Reference may be made to earlier published work if it is necessary to provide context to the entered work, however it will not be formally considered by the judges.
12.10 UNSW Eureka Prize for Scientific Research
12.10.1 The prize is open to individuals and teams of individuals if the achievement is the result of a collaborative team effort.
12.10.2 For team entries;
12.10.2.1 For entries comprised of between two and six individuals, you will need to decide upon one team leader to administer the entry, however you must describe the contribution of each individual to the research and explain why the Eureka Prize should be jointly awarded. This explanation should be included in the ‘Research Summary.’ You will not have the opportunity to formally list all individuals involved in the entry.
12.10.2.2 For entries involving more than six individuals, you will need to decide upon one team leader to administer the entry and enter using a team name.
12.10.3 Activity entered for this prize must have been published in at least one peer-reviewed article (i.e. published in a scientific journal or similar). Reference may be made to earlier published work if it is necessary to provide context to the entered work, however it will not be formally considered by the judges.
12.10.4 Activity entered for this prize must have been undertaken no more than five (5) years prior to the Entry Deadline.
13. Category terms: Science Leadership Eureka Prizes
13.1 Leadership prizes are only open to individuals. Entries consisting of more than one individual are ineligible.
13.2 Entrants can either enter themselves or be nominated by others. If an entrant is nominated it is important they provide input to the documentation in support of their nomination.
13.3 The entrant must be a) an Australian citizen, b) an Australian permanent resident or c) a New Zealand citizen residing in Australia or its territories, at the time the activity entered was undertaken.
13.4 Activity entered for a Eureka Prize must have been undertaken in Australia or its territories, as defined by the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes Terms and Conditions.
13.5 The activity entered or nominated for this prize may not be entered or nominated for another Australian Museum Eureka Prize in the same year.
13.6 A project or activity that has been awarded an Australian Museum Eureka Prize in the past cannot be entered again. Non-winning finalist activity is eligible for re-entry, so long as it meets all other conditions of entry.
Additional prize specific eligibility is listed below.
14. Prize specific terms: Science Leadership Eureka Prizes
14.1 Eureka Prize for Emerging Leader in Science
14.1.1 To be eligible, individuals must satisfy at least one of the below criteria:
a) be 35 years or younger; or
b) Have been awarded their PhD (or equivalent first higher degree e.g., D.Phil., D.Psych., D.Sc) no more than five (5) years prior to prize entry i.e. between April 2018 and April 2023. For entrants whose work has been realised over a period longer than five (5) years from PhD conferral due to one or more career interruptions, the five (5) year requirement will be extended by the length of the career interruption/s and judges will also take this into consideration when assessing opportunities available to the entrant or nominee.
14.1.2 For the purposes of this prize, a ‘career interruption’ is defined as a continuous absence from work for a period of more than one month. Career interruption details will be collected in the online entry form.
The following significant and not overlapping interruptions will be considered:

14.1.3 Judges will consider the entrant or nominee’s career stage and whether their achievement is commensurate with the opportunities available to them. Entrants and nominees are invited, but not required, to share a relative to opportunity statement with their entry materials. If an entrant is nominated it is important that they provide input to their statement.
Research opportunity can include, but is not limited to;
- Research training
- Employment in research positions, either within the research sector or outside academia, including the research component and/or full-time-equivalence of positions
- Research and development activities
- Industry engagement
- Research environment, including supervision, mentoring and leadership
- Professional development
- Research management experience
- Access to research and support facilities
Other opportunities will be considered in the judging panel’s discretion.
15. Category terms: Science Engagement Eureka Prizes
15.1 Entrants can either enter themselves or be nominated by others. If an entrant is nominated it is important that they provide input to the documentation in support of their nomination.
15.2 The activity entered or nominated for this prize may not be entered or nominated for another Australian Museum Eureka Prize in the same year.
15.2 A project or activity that has been awarded an Australian Museum Eureka Prize in the past cannot be entered again. Non-winning finalist activity is eligible for re-entry, so long as it meets all other conditions of entry.

16. Prize specific terms: Science Engagement Eureka Prizes
16.1 Department of Industry, Science and Resources Eureka Prize for Innovation in Citizen Science
16.1.1 For the purposes of this prize, ‘citizen science’ refers to a project where members of the public (citizen scientists) are engaged in authentic research in partnership with professional scientists. The citizen scientists make hands-on and/or intellectual contributions to the research process, usually including data collection and/or analysis, with benefit for the research and the citizen scientists.
16.1.2 Entries for initiatives of all sizes are encouraged, including those that have a local community focus or have been implemented in a local context.
16.1.3 Entries may vary in size and scope and judges will take the relative size of the project into account during judging.
16.1.4 The prize is open to individuals and teams.
16.1.4.1 For team entries;
- For entries comprised of between two and six individuals, you will need to decide upon one team leader to administer the entry, however you must describe the contribution of each individual to the project and explain why the Eureka Prize should be jointly awarded. This explanation should be included in the ‘Project Summary.’
- For entries involving more than six individuals, you will need to decide upon one team leader to administer the entry and enter using a team name. You will not have the opportunity to formally list all individuals involved in the entry.
16.1.5 For an individual entry, the entrant must be a) an Australian citizen, b) an Australian permanent resident or c) a New Zealand citizen residing in Australia or its territories, at the time the activity entered was undertaken.
16.1.6 For a team entry of up to six individuals, the team leader must be either a) an Australian citizen, b) an Australian permanent resident, or c) a New Zealand citizen who was resident in Australia or its territories, at the time the research entered was undertaken. Members of the team do not have to fulfil these requirements; however, they must have resided predominantly in Australia or its territories at the time the activity entered was undertaken.
16.1.7 For a team entry involving more than six individuals, you will need to decide upon a team name and one team leader. The team leader must be either a) an Australian citizen, b) an Australian permanent resident, or c) a New Zealand citizen who was resident in Australia or its territories, at the time the research entered was undertaken. Members of the team do not have to fulfil these requirements; however, they must have resided predominantly in Australia or its territories at the time the activity entered was undertaken.
16.1.8 Activity entered for a Eureka Prize must have been undertaken in Australia or its territories, as defined by the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes Terms and Conditions.
16.1.9 Activity entered for this prize must have been undertaken no more than five (5) years prior to the Entry Deadline. The initiative can have commenced more than five years (5) years ago, but the scope of work covered in the entry should focus on what has been delivered/achieved in the last five (5) years.
16.2 Celestino Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science
16.2.1 This prize is only open to individual scientists working in organisations that include but are not limited to scientific research institutes, companies or universities.
16.2.2 Entries consisting of more than one individual are ineligible.
16.2.3 Activity entered for this prize must have been undertaken no more than two (2) years prior to the Entry Deadline.
16.2.4 For entrants whose work has been realised over a period longer than two (2) years due to one or more career interruptions, the two (2) year requirement will be extended by the length of the career interruption/s, up to a maximum of one (1) year. Entrants who have experienced an eligible career interruption are still required to have undertaken communication activities within the past two (2) years.
16.2.5 For the purposes of this prize, a ‘career interruption’ is defined as a continuous absence from work for a period of more than one month. Career interruption details will be collected in the online entry form. The following significant and not overlapping interruptions will be considered:
- Pregnancy;
- Major illness/injury;
- Carer’s responsibilities;
- Non-research employment not concurrent with research employment;

16.3 Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Science Journalism
16.3.1 The prize is open to individuals and teams of up to six people where the work is the result of a collaborative team effort.
16.3.2 Work entered in this prize must consist of one body of work, single/series of articles or single/multi part documentary, with at least one part published or broadcast for the first time in the Australian media or online no more than twelve (12) months prior to the Entry Deadline. Entrants must submit pieces that best represent their work (maximum of 3 per entry).
16.3.3 Entrants cannot enter a piece both individually and as part of a body of work.
16.3.4 Submitted work must be readily accessible to the public by subscription, newsstand sales, broadcast or digital access. For the purposes of this prize, ‘scientific topic’ refers to the full breadth of STEMM – science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine.
16.3.5 Entrants are required to declare and disclose any subsequent corrections or challenges to the accuracy of an entry, or claims of plagiarism or defamation against the work submitted.
16.3.6 All entrants must be a) Australian citizens, b) Australian permanent residents, or c) New Zealand citizens who were resident in Australia or its territories (as defined by the AM Eureka Prizes Terms and Conditions) at the time the work was undertaken. Where the entry is by a team, all members of the team must meet this criterion.
16.3.7 Work entered must adhere to the highest ethical standard of investigative journalism – including the MEAA Code of Ethics.
16.3.8 Where content from other sources is incorporated for purposes of proper coverage of the topic, this must be attributed.
16.3.9 The following are NOT eligible for this prize:
- collations of materials previously published elsewhere
- work which is only edited by, and not originally produced by, the entrant(s)
- books, magazines and whole websites
16.4 Department of Industry, Science and Resources Eureka Prize for STEM Inclusion
16.4.1 For the purposes of this prize, ‘inclusion’ refers to the participation, engagement and empowerment of all Australians in STEM, particularly people who may be underrepresented such as, but not limited to, women and girls, First Nation communities, people with disability, those from regional and remote areas, the LGBTIQA+ community and people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.

17. Category terms: School Science Prize
17.1 University of Sydney Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize (Primary and Secondary School)
The information in this section pertains to the 2023 Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize
17.1.1 Films must be based on the 2023 theme, ‘Green’.
17.1.2 Films must be two minutes in duration and no longer.
17.1.3 Judges will make their selection based on science communication and entertainment.
17.1.4 Films must focus on a scientific concept, discovery, invention or your own scientific hypothesis – anything goes, but keep the science in the story, and keep the science real!
17.1.5 Entry is free and open to all primary and secondary school students studying at schools in Australia or its territories (as defined by the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes Terms and Conditions). Students that are educated at home in accordance with the relevant state or territory legislation are also eligible to enter.
17.1.6 Entries may be submitted by an individual student or a team of no more than six students. Entries comprising more than six students are ineligible. If an entry was created by more than one person, it should be entered in the appropriate category for the oldest member of the group.

17.1.8 Individuals can only enter once in any year, whether individually or in a group.
17.1.9 Films must not contain graphic violence, coarse language, nudity or any other content not suitable for a general audience.
17.1.10 Films may be in any language or have no dialogue at all. Non-English audio (or important on-screen text) must have English subtitles.
17.1.11 Films should be submitted in .mp4 format. A display resolution of 1280 x 720 will be accepted but 1920 x 1080 is preferred (aspect ratio of 16:9).
17.1.12 Entrants must ensure that all content in their film is their own. It is the sole responsibility of the entrant to secure permission from any third-party owners of content included in their film, including footage, music and images. The AM takes no responsibility for any failure by an entrant to obtain the necessary permissions. Films found to contain unauthorised content will be disqualified. 17.1.13 Entrants aged under 18 years of age may only enter the University of Sydney Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize with the consent of a parent/guardian. The parent/guardian of the entrant must read and consent to be bound to these Terms & Conditions on behalf of the entrant.
17.1.14 Films must be independently financed, written and produced primarily by the individual entrant/s, and they must make all key decisions relating to the submitted film. Entrants are required to indicate on the entry form the nature and extent of any assistance they receive from teachers, parents/guardians, etc.
17.1.15 By submitting your entry, you give the AM a non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable licence to use and reproduce your entry in whole or in part for the purposes of the Eureka Prizes or the purposes of the AM more generally.
17.1.16 All entries must be submitted online by the Entry Deadline. The Australian Museum Eureka Prizes administrators cannot modify or add to an entry after the Entry Deadline.
