Now in its' seventh year, Sydney Science Trail (SST) is presented by the Australian Museum (AM) and Botanic Gardens of Sydney, two of Australia's oldest and esteemed science institutions, attracting over 18,000 participants in 2025. SST celebrates National Science Week with events from 15 - 22 August 2026.
SST includes two key components: a five-day school education program and two Community Days. Together these events aim to inspire curiosity and wonder about the natural world, and raise the profile of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by facilitating opportunities for students and the public to engage directly with leading researchers and scientific experts.
We are recruiting the help of around 100 volunteers to help run these special events. If you are interested in joining our SST volunteer team, please carefully read the SST 2026 Event Volunteer Information Sheet before completing the application form.
We are seeking volunteers who are:
- comfortable communicating and working with people of different backgrounds and ages;
- passionate about learning and sharing insights with others (a science background is welcome, but not essential);
- dependable, flexible, and will bring positive energy to the role; and
- 18+ years of age.
SST Volunteers receive:
- a SST shirt to wear while on shift and keep as a memento of the experience.
- a certificate of appreciation recording your volunteer service.
- the opportunity to inspire others with your knowledge and passion for STEM.
- the opportunities to attend SST events including the Science Social (an evening event for the adult science community held during National Science Week).
- opportunities to meet likeminded people and network.
- a discount at the AM shop.
Don't miss out! Applications to volunteer will close at midnight Wednesday 22 July 2026 unless our team is filled earlier.
