The Museum Experience: Twenty years on
The Museum Experience. Every museum worker should either own a copy or have read a copy of this classic. As the website says: "As the first book to take a 'visitor's eye view' of the museum visit, The Museum Experience revolutionised the way museum professionals understand their constituents."
In this book Falk and Dierking introduced the Interactive Experience Model consisting of the personal, physical and social contexts - a deceptively simple, yet straightforward way to explain the visitor experience (and since updated in their 2000 book Learning from Museums: Visitor Experiences and the Making of Meaning).
I suspect that the revised version will be ready for 2012 - twenty years on, and it will be interesting and fun to reflect on what has changed in that time (and what has also remained the same!).
