Spineblotch Scorpionfish, Sebastapistes mauritiana
Scientific name: Sebastapistes mauritiana
A Spineblotch Scorpionfish at a depth of 5 m, Bawley Point, New South Wales, 3 May 2009.
Notes
The Spineblotch Scorpionfish looks similar to the Southern Red Scorpionfish, Scorpaena papillosa. They both have coronal spines and 10-11 soft rays in the dorsal fin, but Spineblotch Scorpionfish is a small fish (largest is about 10 cm TL) with a very short snout.
Thank you to Dr Hiroyuki Motomura for identifying the fish.
