Email Melanie Russell

Melanie Russell is a Wakka Wakka and Kamilaroi woman with more than 20 years' experience in photography, picture editing, digital asset management and the preservation of visual collections. She is passionate about the role of images in documenting history, supporting truth-telling and preserving First Nations cultural heritage.

In her current role as Senior Digitisation Officer at the Australian Museum, Melanie provides high-quality imaging of the Museum's archival collections as part of the First Nations Community Access to Archives Project, contributing to improved access to First Nations archival material.

Before joining the Australian Museum, Melanie spent 14 years with Australian Associated Press (AAP) as a photo editor, image producer and digital asset manager, following more than a decade as a photojournalist. Throughout her media career, she specialised in image management, metadata, rights management, access and long-term digital preservation, working across AAP, News Corp and Fairfax Media.
