What do we really mean when we talk about happiness? Science, industry and government all seem to have a different understanding of it, and the more we study happiness, the more complicated it becomes.

In this Members-only talk, philosopher Dr Caroline West explores how happiness has been understood across philosophy, psychology and modern research. From the origins of the word — once meaning luck or good fortune — to today’s idea of “subjective wellbeing,” she examines how our understanding of happiness has evolved.

If happiness can conflict with freedom, ambition, truth or meaning — what is the real goal? And what are we actually chasing when we say we want to be happy?
