11 April: Time to transit (Scotia Arc Expedition 2013)
En route to South Georgia.
After completing our late night trawl on the 10th, we began heading for South Georgia. This island is quite far away, so it will take a few days to get there. We used the first day to finish off preserving a few samples, and getting the databases up to date.
Staying busy during downtime on a ship is kind of important to keep people sane. So today we had a training session on what the various instruments on the ship do, and how to interpret the various data screens around the ship.
Movie nights are important too! And now teams for the shipboard ping-pong tournament are getting organized as well.
Today’s pictures show a few examples of the animals we have been finding. Most of what we collect is large enough to photograph with a small hand held digital camera. But some are very small, and these are usually photographed under a microscope to reveal the detail of their shapes. Enjoy!
