The Leo Fleischmann Fellowship offers researchers up to $2,500 to conduct research on the art and material culture of the Pacific region.
This fellowship, generally awarded every two years, was established in 1995 by the late Ms Senta Taft-Hendry in memory of Leo Fleischmann of Galleries Primitif, Woollahra. It is designed to increase knowledge about the arts and material culture of the Pacific Islands through original research on the extensive collections in the Australian Museum from Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.
Selection criteria:
- Significance of the intellectual contribution to the collection of interest
- Enhancement to the Australian Museum cultural collections
- Clear and appropriate budget
- Proven track record of the applicant in the field of study.
The maximum amount of the fellowship is $2,500 to assist with living costs, travel and research expenses. The award can be held in conjunction with an Australian Museum Collections Fellowship which must be applied for independently in a separate application.
Eligibility
Preference will be given to Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents. Candidates should have at least an Honours degree or appropriate research or experience qualifications. Candidates with extensive knowledge and connection to Pacific cultures equivalent to the above awards will be considered.

Potential applicants must document that the Pacific Collection Manager has acknowledged that project is feasible and can be accommodated (this can be via email).
Application checklist:
- Completed application form;
- A brief Curriculum Vitae, including a summary statement of academic record/transcript and the names and contact details of at least two referees;
- Approval by the Australian Museum Pacific Collection Manager (this can be via email).
