Over the years, the Fish Section (Ichthyology) has many wonderful volunteers who helped us by sorting specimens, specimen registration and collection management duties. This gallery shows just some of them. To all, thank you!

Stephanie began volunteering in the Ichthyology Section in early September 2010

Carson began volunteering in August 2010 and since that time has worked in the collection, processed part of a large collection of larval fishes from Panama and registered a number of smaller collections. Thank you Carson!

Morgan started work on 10 January 2012 and volunteered two days a week for several months before starting her studies at the University of Sydney in March 2012.
During her time with us Morgan did a fantastic job. She reorganised the fish library, put away hundreds of vials of larval fishes in the collection and also worked in the type area. Thank you Morgan!

It's hard to praise Lawrie enough. She volunteered in the Fish Section for over 15 years, most of the time sorting and registering specimens. For many years she worked with KE Texpress database software but more recently successfully made the leap to KE Emu. Thank you Lawrie!

Geoff began volunteering in the Ichthyology Section in early September 2010.
Pascal worked in the Fish Section during 2004 during his Honours year (UTS). His thesis was entitled 'Distribution of estuary-dependent larvae in surf zones on the New South Wales South Coast.'

Simone Herrmannsen is a student at the University of New South Wales. She volunteered in the Fish Section from May to August 2016. Her duties to included registering larval and deepsea fishes, and updating the database with new identifications for goby specimens
Anne Harris Stevens began volunteering in the Fish Section in August 2010. She is currently identifying deepsea fishes from the Coral Sea and databasing the associated information.

Notes
Barbara has volunteered in the Fish Section since 1993. She has done many jobs but in recent times has sorted and identified Coral Sea adult fishes and worked with John Paxton identifying myctophids.

Tom began volunteering in early September 2010 and worked though till early 2011. He performed a range of collection managment duties including working on a large collection of fishes from Panama.

Krystle's main duties while volunteering in the Fish Section were the registration and identification of fishes from One Tree Island, Queensland.

Dr Clint Kelly has a PhD from the University of Toronto. He is currently doing a postdoc at the Australian National University.
Clint is studying geographic variation in body size and shape of the Pacific Blue Eye, Pseudomugil signifer.
During his visit, Clint photographed many specimens of Pacific Blue Eye using the photographic setup shown in the image.

We first met Tim in 2007 when he spent a week of work experience in the Fish Section. He is now studying science with an emphasis on marine biology at the University of Technology.
Since doing work experience Tim has volunteered whenever he has the time. His latest day 'on duty' was on 17 February 2011, during which he worked in the larval fish collection and with the fish types.

Madi is a first year student at the University of New South Wales. She began volunteeering in December 2016.
Her current duties include documenting a large collection of freshwater fishes collected in various localities around New South Wales.

Notes
Mark Mamrot volunteered in the Fish Section during 2004. He mostly unpacked and registered fishes collected on the NORFANZ expedition.
Tim Martin began volunteering in the Ichthyology Section in December 2006. He mostly registered freshwater fishes collected by NSW DPI, Fisheries. Tim completed his BSc at the University of Newcastle in 2006.

Jack is a second year University of Technology student who is doing voluntary work with the Fish Section.
He is currently sorting and identifying fishes collected by Australian Museum staff near Caves Beach, New South Wales in May 2009.

Sonja volunteered in the Fish Section from March 2004 to 2005.

Sascha has volunteered on and off since 2004 and has also worked in paid positions at the museum.
His current research interests include the rockpool fishes of the Illawarra, fish species diversity and ecology, and the biology of the Bastard Trumpeter.
Born in Germany, Sascha migrated to Australia in 1988 with his parents and sister. He soon discovered that the waters around Tathra were home to a fascinating range of creatures.
After moving to Wollongong to study Electrical Engineering, he became interested in underwater photography. Upon finishing his engineering degree in 2002, he decided one degree was not enough, and has now added a Marine Biology degree to his CV.
His current research interests include the rockpool fishes of the Illawarra, fish species diversity and ecology, and the biology of the Bastard Trumpeter.

Felicity Roos has been on staff and volunteered on and off since March 2005. She has performed a range of collection management duties including specimen registration, database entry, library work and larval fish sorting.

Notes
Jane began volunteering in the Fish Section in January 2010. Her previous employment was at Sydney University where she lectured in Veterinary Anatomy, including anatomy and physiology of fishes .
Dianne began volunteering with the Ichthyology Department in April 2014. She is working on the department's large collection of reprints (scientific papers).
Lachlan recently completed an honours degree in marine science at the University of Technology, Sydney.
He started volunteering in the Fish Section in late January 2015 and has worked in the ichthyology collection and on the database.
