The Australian Museum (AM) is proud to announce John Baxter, a proud Latja Latja/Narungga man who will be partnering with the Museum for its Mob at the Museum: Cultural Residency Program.

Mob at the Museum is an initiative in which one First Nations Knowledge Holder joins the Museum on a series of projects to build relationships between the AM and First Nations communities and provide the public opportunities to learn from First Nations leaders, artists, creators, and community pillars.

Meet Uncle John Baxter

Uncle John Baxter is a proud Latja Latja/Narungga man and a strong advocate for community, culture, and self-determination. Born in Robinvale in 1960 with spina bifida, he was separated from his family and raised in non-Aboriginal care. Reuniting with his siblings and father in his late teens sparked a deep reconnection to culture and country that continues to shape his life’s work.

Throughout his life, Uncle John has shared his lived experience to raise awareness around the intersections of identity, disability, and justice. He speaks with school groups, elders, and communities - emphasising pride, resilience, and the importance of creating brighter futures for the next generations.

As a cultural collaborator on Unfinished Business, Uncle John brings national and international attention to the voices of First Nations people with disability. His work is grounded in the belief that strong cultural identity, truth-telling, and community connection are key to healing past harms and building a more just and inclusive future.

Not fit for purpose

Presented for the first time at the Australian Museum as part of the Unfinished Business exhibition, the installation, ‘Not fit for purpose’, by Uncle John offers a striking reflection on the systemic inequities within Australia’s disability support systems.
