Historically, Niuean villages managed the ocean off their coastline, governing fishing through traditional practices. Niue’s geography is unique, with its highest point being 60 metres above sea level, making the parameter of the island cliff-sides.
As an adaptation to this environment, Niuean's have developed specific methods to fish in sustainable and accessible ways to maintain cultural fishing practices.
