
Zara El Mahir
Zara is an emerging museum professional deeply committed to upholding the integrity of Australia’s cultural institutions. She joins the Museum as a recent graduate of the Master of Museum and Heritage Studies (USYD) with a diverse range of museum experiences. Prior to working at the Australian Museum, Zara was on the digitisation project at the Powerhouse Museum as a collections officer and facilitated with the digitisation of over 300,000 objects. She also volunteered at the Chau Chak Wing Museum on the industry leading Human Remains Research Project in which she worked to empower Egyptian voices to challenge the display of disarticulated Egyptian mummified remains.
Her role as a Project Officer in the Cultural Collection Enhancement Project is to facilitate First Nations engagement with their cultural heritage through data enhancement. This involves close collaboration across the division to digitise, document, barcode, location audit and register the Aboriginal Archaeology Collections, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islands Cultural Collections, Pasifika Cultural Collections, and World Cultures Collections. By ensuring the accuracy of museum records, Zara supports the Division’s aims of empowering First Nations communities through cultural sovereignty and improving the accessibility of Australian museums.
