In this hands-on experience, master the traditional artform of shellwork and spark your creativity to make your own unique piece to take home.
First Nations elder, artist and educator, Aunty Maxine Ryan will guide you through this traditional practice that has been passed down from generation-to-generation. From the La Perouse Aboriginal Community of Botany Bay, Aunty Maxine's family are renowned shellwork artists with true passion and knowledge of this craft, which will inspire your creativity.
Shellwork art remains an important practice for the traditional people of Coastal Sydney. Learn about the history and cultural significance of this artform as you decorate your very own wooden boomerang with local shells. Join us for this unique workshop as we celebrate NAIDOC Week.
Workshops are tailored for three age groups (5-8 years, 9-12 years and 13-16 years). All materials will be provided.

Aboriginal artist and educator, Aunty Maxine Ryan is a respected Aboriginal elder from the La Perouse Aboriginal Community of Botany Bay. Aunty Maxine comes from a family of renowned shell artists going back generations. With a background in education, Aunty Maxine has many years experience working in local public schools and in the community with families who have family members with a disability. Aunty Maxine Ryan is passionate about sharing her love and knowledge of Aboriginal arts and crafts.
