Cast into a slab of rock is the skeleton of a Stenopterygius – one of the Ichthyosaurs – a fish-like marine reptile similar in appearance to modern dolphins. Run your fingers along the slab to feel the long snout; small head; numerous pebble sized bones that form the flippers and over a hundred vertebrae that make up the spine and tail.
Stenopterygius lived during the Middle Jurassic period – 183-176 million years ago. They grew to about as high as a doorway and was a fast swimmer who spent most its time in the open sea and fed on fish and other sea life.
