Pelican
Kristy Knight
It is not often that a photographer and an animal agree on how it should be photographed. Such is the case with this pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus), which I photographed on Kangaroo Island, South Australia.

Rainforest Dragon
Stanley and Kaisa Breeden
We were attracted to this Boyd’s forest dragon’s (Hypsilurus boydii) steady gaze, the subtle colour pattern and the fine detail.

Black-shouldered Kite Flying with a Mouse
Ofer Levy
I was sitting in my hide, near Sydney Airport, photographing black-winged stilts when this kite (Elanus axillaris) landed very close in front of me and took off with the mouse (Murinae sp.).

Fighting Egrets
Allen Peate
Before daylight, near St Lawrence, Queensland, I crept into a natural freshwater billabong that was teeming with birdlife. I photographed the birds for about two hours. A small flock of egrets (Egretta sp.) was feeding along the edge of the billabong when a lone egret flew in. A fight broke out just in front of where I was sitting and I was lucky enough to get a series of shots.

Temora Bushfire
Nick Moir
The storms that were created by a heat trough led to bushfires sparked by lightning. The strong outflow winds from these storms drove the fires into inaccessible land in the summer of 2009, making firefighting on the ground difficult. Dangerous spot fires were hammered by the vigilance of the firefighting aircraft. This shot was taken 30km north of Temora, in southwestern New South Wales.
