Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year 2025

See nature in focus through stunning images by professional, emerging and junior photographers who have shown impeccable timing, patience, artistry and technique to capture incredible moments in time.

This breathtaking exhibition allows us to witness the unique beauty of the flora, fauna and landscapes of our own back yard and the world around us, all while celebrating the natural heritage of Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and New Guinea bioregions.

These images provoke us to explore and understand the changing nature of our environment and appreciate the wonder that surrounds us while enriching our knowledge of this extraordinary region.

This annual competition, owned and produced by the South Australian Museum, attracts entries from around the world. In 2025 the competition received 1,864 images from 449 photographers in 18 countries, the best of which are displayed in this competition.

Introduction and Acknowledgement

Stop 2
2025 Competition Judges
The 2025 competition judges are Scott Portelli, Jasmine Vink and David Stowe.
Stop 3
Portfolio
The Portfolio Prize is awarded to the photographer who enters the best portfolio of six images with a common theme selected by the photographer.
Stop 4
Macro
Intended to examine small elements of nature up close, with the subject to be presented larger than life size.
Stop 5
2025 Overall Winner
Overall Winner of the 2025 Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year.
Stop 6
Celebrating 21 Years
The Australian, New Zealand, Antarctica, and New Guinea (ANZANG) Nature and Landscape was created by Dr Stuart Miller in 2004.

2004 - 2009 Winners
Winners of the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year from 2004 - 2009.
Stop 8
2010 - 2019 Winners
Winners of the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year from 2010 - 2019.

2020 - 2024 Winners
Winners of the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year from 2020 - 2024.
Stop 10
Aerial
A photograph taken from an elevated position (i.e. from a fixed vantage point or from an aircraft) or captured with a drone.
Stop 11
Monochrome
This category includes all monochrome photography including black and white, sepia-toned and infrared photographs. Entries must otherwise qualify for any of the other sections.
Stop 12
Landscape
A landscape or seascape that shows a natural environment. Evidence of humans can be present; however, it must not be the focus of the photograph.
Stop 13
Animals in Nature
The animal(s) must be photographed in a natural environment. They may be either native or feral but must be depicted in nature with minimal evidence of human activity.
Stop 14
Astrophotography
The subject of the photograph must be the night sky. This can include astronomical objects, celestial events and areas of the night sky.
Stop 15
Our Impact
The image must depict human impact on nature, be it terrestrial, aquatic or atmospheric. This impact may be positive or negative.
Stop 16
Threatened Species
The subject(s) depicted must be listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered on the IUCN Red List.
Stop 17
Junior
Works by artists under 18 years of age that also qualify for any of the other sections.
