Winner Threatened Species

Golden Seahorse

White’s Seahorse is endemic to the east coast of Australia. The species is classed as endangered, with large population declines over recent decades due mainly to habitat loss.

They have the ability to change colour and blend with habitat, including the beautiful yellow soft coral in this image.

Judges' comments

A beautiful photograph of an endangered species in its environment. Framed by coral, with perfect lighting and exposure, this seahorse looks ready to take to the stage.

Runner Up Threatened Species

Disappearing Act
Harriet Spark, New South Wales

Hawksbill Turtles are disappearing as human-driven impacts like climate change, marine debris and poaching impact global populations. Lady Elliot Island is a protected ‘no-take’ sanctuary where marine life can thrive. With less than eight per cent of our oceans globally protected, we need more places like this that are safe havens for marine life.

Judges' comments

There is a genuine sense of motion in this image, with vibrance in colour and shape. The turtle’s shell appears luminous, reflecting the ocean above, in perfect balance.
