A fascinating take on human impact, demonstrating that it extends far beyond water and Country and into the sky. The distant glow of civilisation reminds us that even in the desert we’re not alone. It’s admirable that the photographer has used this medium to document an impact not readily seen with the naked eye.
Runner Up Our Impact
Spotted Harrier Caught Up In A Fence
Karoliina Kase, South Australia
This bird perished in the fencing of a dairy farm. Besides being one of the major causes of global warming, animal agriculture causes myriad issues which all lead to biodiversity loss. Mismanaged land, soil depletion and fencing increase migration and habitat issues for wildlife.

The bird’s dramatic shape heightens the impact of this arresting image. Nature is crucified against barbed wire, ugly and unpalatable, yet still beautiful. The bird’s silhouette can be interpreted as a character crying for help.
