In 2015 we got our Native Title rights but just before then it took us 19 years to do that, but just before they gave us our Native Title rights, they was also mucking around with the Barka. And when we got the Native Title rights it took us 19 years to prove who we was and they listened so they gave us Native Title rights. But me, I'm Barka Wiimpatja, that means I’m a Darling River black person, I take our name from the Barka and from the nguku, the water, that’s who I am.
So when they done all that they gave us the land, but they took our water rights. We the only blackfullas that I know of in Western NSW what’s named after a river. To me they may as well take that Native Title rights - it means nothing. All it means is starting my people fighting against one another and fighting with the white people that’s trying to help us. I don’t care what the government say, I am me.
