The statistics on how much food NSW households throw away and waste is shocking.
I recently read some information about how much edible food households in our state waste and I have to say the numbers are rather huge. Here are some of the statistics:
1 $2.5 billion dollars worth of edible food is thrown away every year
2 1.1 million tonnes of food ends up in landfill every year
3 $1,000.00 worth of food is thrown away each year for every household
4 38% of our weekly garbage is food
This waste is not only about the food but also the waste to grow it, package it and transport the food to markets and shops. We end up wasting energy, water and natural resources.
When the waste is sent to landfill it contributes directly to climate change. How? Together with other organic material it produces methane gas, a gas 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
What things can we do to reduce this costly waste? Here are a few tips:
1 Menu planning – Plan your meals and then take a shopping list to the shops
2 Learn portion sizes- Apparently we cook too much so we need to learn how to cook just the right amount of food for the number of people
3 Save it –We also need to learn how to store our foods so they last longer
Just by sticking to these three tips we can save time and money and better still have a positive outcome in helping our environment and living sustainably.
